raelyn west was an outcast. in wilmington, where all the girls were blonde cheerleaders, she was the jet black haired "scene" girl. in this small town, the girls dressed in expensive clothes and had sun kissed skin. the boys were muscular and extremely sought after. there were a few people that she knew who were similar to her, namely her best male friend, carter, but he was older. so when she was in school and had no one to hang out with, she really felt like she did not belong. then there was money. normally, the families here were well off or very wealthy, but for some odd reason, rae and her mother were borderline poor. rae knew that it had to do with her mother's drug addiction. all her mother did now was stay in their apartment and sleep during the day. at night, she'd ride to the nearest big city and party it up. did her mother have a job? absolutely not. raelyn was the breadwinner in her household. all that mother of hers did was sleep, shoot up and fuck.
the apartment was always dark. the blinds stayed shut and they rarely turned on the lights so the electric bill wouldn't be so high. her mother had stumbled in last night with an unruly biker and all night rae couldn't sleep because she could hear them having sex one room away. her mother never cared about her. no one did. her father didn't even give much of a shit to stick around. he had left as soon as her mom found out she was pregnant at the age of seventeen - which was her current age - and she would be damned if she ever made the same mistake as her mother and have a baby so young. unlike some people in this town, rae had high hops of getting the fuck out of here and going to columbia university in new york. the school was prestigious, so he worked very hard in school to achieve all a's. she was not going to let anything hold her back.
wanting to escape the sounds of her mother puking up last night's alcohol, the frail girl walked out in a pair of black skinny jeans, black converse and an off the shoulder grey sweater she had cut up a few years ago. her eyes were outlined in black eyeliner and framed by thick lashes. the rest of her pale face was plain, except for the silver ring that pierced through her septum. it was a little chilly out, so she hugged herself, letting her hair fly in the breeze. it was still early, she was sure it would warm up later on. usually rae stayed away from the places where she would run into a lot of her classmates, so going into town was an absolute no. instead, she went to the meadow because it was gorgeous and empty since most of the kids here hated nature.
there was a boy here already, which surprised her. she was even more surprised to realize that it was bentley taylor. he was really popular and good looking, all the girls wanted him. however, she never gave him a second look. not because she thought she was too good for him, but because she knew he would never notice her. even though she was so different, somehow, she was still invisible, unless kids were looking for an easy target to pick on. heading in the direction away from him, rae found a little barren spot and sat down, bringing her knees to her chest and resting her chin upon them. she wished she had brought her journal or her ipod, but she had wanted to get out of the house so quickly, just in case her mother made her hold her hair back as she worshiped the porcelain god.
