The auditorium had always been a place where Thorne Isabel Lohrasbe could just let loose and be herself. Which was saying something, really, as she was the type of girl to keep everything bottled up inside. And it wasn't really true, now that she thought about it, that she could always be herself in the auditorium at St Thomas Academy. Only if she was there alone. That was why she'd been going there as often as possible, at times when she knew nothing was happening there. She'd go and stand on the stage and sing, her voice filling the entire theater. Or, on days when she didn't even feel like singing, she'd just sit in one of the red seats and stare blankly around the room, thinking about anything and everything that came to mind until she felt emotionally drained.
Today was one of the singing days. Carefully, Thorne climbed the little steps up onto the stage, ignoring the fact that while she wished the lights were shining on her and there was a cheering crowd of fans -- ha, as if -- she simply had to make do with fluorescent lights humming above her and an empty theater to sing for. As she reached the center of the stage, she turned towards the empty auditorium and imagined an upturned face in each and every seat. Smiles and eager eyes waiting for her to sing for them.
Her voice came to her easily, as it always had. "Mama, you taught me to do the right thing, so now it's time to let your baby fly. You've given me everything that I will need to get me through this crazy thing called life..." God, tears were already coming to her eyes, even as she was only just beginning to sing. She blinked them back as she envisioned her mother in the first row of seats, the red chair in the very center. Thorne was sure that her mother would be smiling.
"And I know you watched me grow up and only want what's best for me, and I think I've found the answer to your prayers..." Oh, she wished. Wouldn't that be nice? No, Thorne was probably never going to fall in love, not properly. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to be in love with anybody, ever. What was the point? They were only going to leave, eventually, no matter how much she wanted them to stay.
"And he is good, so good. He treats your little girl like a real man should; he is good, so good. He makes promises he keeps, he ain't ever gonna leave..." If only she could find that guy. The one who wouldn't leave. Ever. She'd be okay if she fell in love with that guy.
Very suddenly, the door to the auditorium opened. Thorne's voice died in her throat. "So don't you worry about -- oh. Hi."
